The Van Buren Conservation District is one of four Conservation Districts across the State working to roll out a new food safety program in the summer of 2017. This new program is currently under development by the district’s newest employee; Heather Cummings, who will fill the roll of Food Safety Technician in Allegan, Berrien, Kalamazoo, and Van Buren counties.
In response to new food safety regulations, the Conservation District is working with the state of Michigan to provide assistance to produce growers. This voluntary program will give local growers the opportunity to have their questions answered and learn the best methods to protect both their families and their customers. The program is set up to have a local and available technician assist with the implementation of safe food growing and harvesting practices on produce farms across multiple counties in Michigan. This includes outreach, education, on-farm technical assistance and coordination with local, state and federal agency resources to help produce growers reduce food safety risks and make progress towards implementation of practices consistent with the Food Safety Modernization Act Produce Safety Rule.
As we finalize program materials we would like your input! Please take 10 minutes to answer a short survey and share with us what concerns you might have about food safety on your farm. To take the survey, click here. We appreciate your input!
