Urban Agriculture Community Needs Assessment Survey

Encuesta de evaluación de necesidades de la comunidad de agricultura urbana

The Kalamazoo Conservation District has received a grant from the National Association of Conservation Districts to conduct a community needs assessment on urban agriculture in Kalamazoo County.

If you fall under any of the below categories and you would like to operate an urban farm business or expand your current operation, we need your input.

  • You work on a farm or other agricultural setting (such as greenhouse)
  • You are a backyard farmer (grow food for my family and friends)
  • You would like to operate an Urban Farm Business
  • You participate in a Community Garden
  • You are a non-farmer but may like to start an urban farm business

There is also an option for local organizations to provide input.

WHY should you complete the survey?

We are reaching out to members of the community to better understand the type of programming that will best suit the needs of urban farmers. Your feedback will be used to provide outreach to those who will benefit from conservation programs, technical assistance, and farm bill programs. Your feedback will also be used to plan, design, and implement future conservation related workshops, informational sessions, and practice demonstrations that will best meet the needs of our urban community.

This survey consists of approximately 15 questions. Please answer each question to the best of your ability. This survey should take only 10 minutes to complete.  You can easily take this survey on your smartphone, tablet, or computer.

We could also complete the survey with you over the phone during office hours
(9:00 am - 4:00 pm Monday -Friday). Just give us a call at the conservation district office at 269-775-3368.

What's an Urban Farm Business?
The USDA defines an urban farm agribusiness as a place from which $1,000 or more of agricultural products were produced, donated, sold, or normally would have been sold, during the year. The EPA defines an urban farm as part of a local food system where food is produced within an urban area and marketed to consumers within that area.

If you are just in the beginning planning stages to determine if owning an urban farm business is something you could do, there is a section of this survey that you could fill out to provide us with the information you need to help you make this decision

Thank you so much for taking the time to assist the Kalamazoo Conservation with providing your input.
