Our Environmental Journey

Our Story

Conservation Districts (CDs) are your local providers of natural resource education, technical assistance, and management services - much like your local fire, police, health, and school services.

We're also your neighbors, helping fellow Michiganders protect and improve land and water resources - so our environment and communities can be cleaner, healthier, and economically stronger place to live, work and grow.

Formed in response to the 1930s Dust Bowl, Conservation Districts are unique, locally-led public entities that utilize state, federal, and private sector resources to address today's conservation challenges like the climate crisis, forest health, soil erosion, and water pollution. Crucially, all CD programming is voluntary and non-regulatory. Founded in 1946 by community petition, KCD has served the Kalamazoo County community for over 75 years.

KCD staff, technicians, and volunteers work hand-in-hand with local, state, and federal organizations to deliver programs that directly assist landowners and residents while improving environmental quality and natural resource health across Kalamazoo County.

Board of Directors

Dedication. Expertise. Passion.

The Kalamazoo Conservation District is governed by a locally elected, five-member Board of Directors. The Directors make decisions regarding the District’s programs and activities, hire qualified staff to run district operations and lend vital expertise to advance local conservation services to the Kalamazoo County community.
