Age: 1 yr

Size: 18-24"

Height at maturity: Historically reached 80–100 feet (24–30 meters) as a large tree, occasionally up to 115 feet (35 meters) in optimal conditions. Modern specimens, due to chestnut blight, are often smaller, growing as multi-stemmed shrubs or small trees to 20–40 feet (6–12 meters).

Diameter: The trunk of a mature tree can reach 2–4 feet (60–120 cm) in diameter in rare, healthy specimens. The canopy spread is typically 40–60 feet (12–18 meters) wide for mature trees, or 10–20 feet (3–6 meters) for shrubby forms.

Crown shape: Develops a broad, rounded to spreading crown with sturdy, horizontal branches. Young trees have a more upright, oval shape, while mature trees form a wide, dome-like canopy with a dense, leafy structure.

Benefits: Historically produced abundant, sweet chestnuts in spiky burs, a vital food source for humans, wildlife (e.g., deer, bears, birds), and livestock. Offers attractive summer foliage and golden-yellow fall color. Supports pollinators like bees with small, creamy flowers (June–July). Provides high-quality, rot-resistant wood for furniture, fencing, and construction. Efforts to restore blight-resistant strains are ongoing, making it valuable for reforestation and ecological restoration. Tolerates a range of conditions but is highly susceptible to chestnut blight, requiring careful management. Low maintenance in blight-free settings but rare in natural landscapes today.

Best soil type: Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soils (pH 5.0–6.5). Thrives in loamy or sandy soils with moderate fertility and good moisture retention. Tolerates rocky or clay soils but requires good drainage to prevent root issues. Performs best in full sun to partial shade.
