Age: 1 yr

Size: 18-24"

Height at maturity: Typically reaches 20–30 feet (6–9 meters) as a small tree or large shrub, occasionally up to 40 feet (12 meters) in optimal conditions. Often grows with a single trunk or multi-stemmed habit.

Diameter: The trunk of a mature tree can reach 8–12 inches (20–30 cm) in diameter. The canopy spread is typically 15–25 feet (4.5–7.6 meters) wide, depending on growing conditions.

Crown shape: Develops a rounded to vase-shaped crown with spreading, slightly zigzagging branches. Young trees are more upright, maturing to a broader, open form with a graceful, arching structure.

Benefits: Produces vibrant, pink to purplish flowers (March–May) along branches before leaves emerge, attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies. Yields flat, pea-like seed pods that persist into winter, providing food for birds (e.g., cardinals, finches). Offers attractive heart-shaped leaves in summer and yellow fall foliage. Ideal for ornamental landscaping, urban gardens, or as an understory tree. Supports wildlife and adds early spring color to landscapes. Tolerates a range of conditions but may be susceptible to pests like redbud leafhopper or diseases like verticillium wilt. Low maintenance but benefits from occasional pruning to maintain shape.

Best soil type: Prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH 5.5–7.5). Thrives in loamy or sandy soils with moderate fertility. Tolerates clay soils but requires good drainage to prevent root issues. Performs best in full sun to partial shade, with full sun enhancing flower production.
