Age: 1 yr

Size: 18-24"

Height at maturity: Typically reaches 60–100 feet (18–30 meters) as a large tree, though it can grow up to 130 feet (40 meters) in optimal conditions. Young trees may be maintained as smaller specimens in managed landscapes.

Diameter: The trunk of a mature tree can reach 2–3 feet (60–90 cm) in diameter, occasionally larger. The canopy spread is typically 40–80 feet (12–24 meters) wide, depending on growing conditions.

Crown shape: Develops a dense, broadly rounded, or oval crown with a symmetrical, uniform structure. Young trees have a more upright, conical shape, maturing to a wider, dome-like form with strong branching.

Benefits: Produces vibrant fall foliage in brilliant shades of yellow, orange, red, or crimson, making it a standout ornamental tree. Yields sap used for maple syrup production, a culturally and economically significant product. Provides food and habitat for wildlife, including birds and mammals, with seeds (samaras) eaten by squirrels and birds. Supports pollinators like bees with early spring flowers. Offers shade and aesthetic value in landscapes, parks, and urban areas. Has strong wood used for furniture and flooring. Tolerates a range of conditions but may be sensitive to urban stressors like pollution or compacted soils. Low maintenance but susceptible to pests like maple scale or diseases like verticillium wilt.

Best soil type: Prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH 5.5–7.3). Thrives in deep, fertile, loamy soils rich in organic matter. Tolerates sandy or clay soils but requires good drainage to avoid root issues. Performs best in full sun to partial shade, with consistent moisture for optimal growth.
